There is so much to discover and explore in the BVI! Located in the heart of the Caribbean, this tropical archipelago boasts dramatic volcanic boulders, idyllic white sandy beaches, and dozens of quiet, hidden anchorages. Onshore, enjoy iconic beach joints, upscale resorts, and scenic hiking trails, including the famous paths through the boulders of The Baths. The BVI is universally recognized as the ultimate yacht charter playground.



Culture

The British Virgin Islands boast a rich, multi-layered history shaped by Indigenous peoples, European exploration, and a strong African heritage. As a British Overseas Territory, the islands blend British traditions with a vibrant Caribbean spirit. For travelers, connecting with this heritage is all about mutual respect: always begin your interactions with a warm, formal greeting ("Good morning" or "Good afternoon") before asking for directions, cover up your swimwear when leaving the beach or entering towns, and happily trade your fast-paced routine for the relaxed, mindful flow of "island time."




Travel and Customs

Airports

  • Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS): Located on Beef Island (connected to Tortola by a short bridge).

  • Cyril E. King Airport (STT) - St. Thomas, USVI: Many travelers choose to fly into St. Thomas due to a wider selection of direct international flights. From St. Thomas, you can seamlessly take a ferry or pre-arrange a private water taxi directly into the BVI to meet your charter. Find out more here about taking a ferry or water taxi. 

Airlines

  • International/Regional into EIS: Inter Caribbean Airways, Cape Air, Silver Airways, Caribbean Airlines, American Airlines (offering direct flights from Miami).

  • International into STT (St. Thomas alternative): American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines.

Ground Transfers

Large taxi vans accommodating multiple people plus luggage are widely available at BVI airports and ferry terminals. (You will likely be asked if you’d like a taxi before having to find one).

  • Note: Rates are often per person, not per car, and additional bags loaded into the trunk may incur additional costs.

  • Note: Cash is the primary payment method accepted by local taxi drivers; standard credit cards are rarely accepted in local taxis.

Customs & Immigration

A valid passport is mandatory for all visitors entering the British Virgin Islands, and it is highly recommended that your passport does not expire within 3 months of your travel dates. Depending on your nationality, a visa may be required, so please check before you travel (not required for U.S., Canadian, or UK citizens for tourist stays).

To ensure your entry is as smooth, quick, and hassle-free as possible, the officers will need your full attention and cooperation. Let's keep things professional at the checkpoints so we can get you onto "island time" without any delays.

Traveling with Children

Any person under the age of 18 is considered a minor. If a minor is traveling alone, with only one parent, or with friends/relatives, they should carry a signed and notarized travel consent letter from both parents/legal guardians to present to Immigration.

Marinas & Accommodations

Marinas: The primary charter bases on Tortola include Village Cay Marina (Road Town), Nanny Cay Marina (Sea Cows Bay)  and Sopers hole Marin (West End).  Your specific pick-up and drop-off location will be confirmed about two weeks before your charter begins, if your broker has not already confirmed these details with you.

Shoreside Accommodations: Feel free to reach out to us for hotel recommendations, or use sites such as Tripadvisor for recommendations from other travelers if you plan to extend your stay before or after your charter.



Currency & Banking

Currency: Surprisingly to many, the official currency of the BVI is the U.S. Dollar ($).

Cash vs. Cards: Major credit cards are widely accepted at established resorts, upscale shops, and larger restaurants. However, cash is highly recommended and necessary for small island beach bars, local taxis, and crew gratuities.

Tipping: Tipping follows standard North American protocols, with 15% to 20% being customary in restaurants and bar establishments. Always check your bill, as some establishments automatically add a service charge. For luxury crewed yacht charters, an industry-standard tip of 15% to 20% of the base charter fee is customary, scaled based on your satisfaction with the crew's service. 


Electrical and Communications

Power: Outlets in the BVI are standard North American Type A and Type B plugs (110V/120V) running at 60Hz. The electrical sockets on your yacht will depend on the vessel; however, most yachts carry adapters. Be sure to ask your broker or crew if you have devices that require specific voltage or constant power ( hairdryers and CPAP machines).

Connectivity: While cell signals are strong near the main island of Tortola,coverage can become weak or drop when tucked into remote anchorages or behind mountainous islands. We recommend downloading your favorite music, movies, and important travel files before stepping onboard. Turn off automatic cellular photo syncing, and consider an e-sim from Airalo (use code TCYC9670 for a $3 credit) for cost-effective data roaming.


Health:

While we expect nothing but smooth sailing, your safety is always our top priority. The BVI offers modern medical care, though it is more localized compared to the U.S. mainland.

Medical Facilities: The primary hospital is the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital located in Road Town, Tortola. For minor emergencies or urgent care on outer islands, small clinics operate on Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, and Anegada.

Insurance Tip: Because the BVI is a foreign territory, standard domestic U.S. health insurance plans are generally not accepted directly. We highly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel medical insurance that covers international travel and medical evacuation.

Emergency Services: For emergencies at sea, the BVI has an active search and rescue organization via VISAR (Virgin Islands Search and Rescue), which can be reached on VHF Channel 16 or by dialing 767 locally.


Weather:

December to April: The peak winter season. Postcard-perfect blue skies, gorgeous sunshine, and comfortable tropical temperatures averaging 78°F to 83°F (25°C–28°C). The famous, steady "Christmas Winds" provide premium sailing conditions. Water temperatures averaging 78°F to 81°F (25.5°C to 27°C).

May to July: Warm, lush, and tranquil. Temperatures rise slightly to around 85°F–88°F (29°C–31°C). The breezes soften, resulting in incredibly calm, flat, lake-like seas. This is the absolute prime time of year for snorkeling and enjoying water sports. Water temperatures average 81°F to 83°F (27°C to 28.5°C). 

August to November: The late summer quiet season, and it can also be an incredible time to charter! Summer Sailing into fall is one of the islands' best-kept secrets, offering breathtaking "glass out" days where the ocean turns into a mirror of absolute calm. The weather is warmer and more humid, with occasional passing tropical showers. While this aligns with the Atlantic hurricane season, your Captain will monitor real-time weather models meticulously to ensure a safe, comfortable, and tailored route. It’s a peaceful time on the water with the warmest sea temperatures of the year, averaging a luxurious 83°F to 84°F (28.5°C to 29°C).



Best Time to charter:

Choosing when to book ultimately comes down to your schedule and preferences. Seasoned sailors love the winter months (December to April) when the steady "Christmas Winds" create ideal sailing conditions with water temperatures around 78°F–81°F. However, the summer and fall months can also be prime time on the water. IN teh summer and fall, the breezes soften into flat, lake-like seas that are absolute perfection for snorkeling.


Marine Life:

The crystal-clear, warm waters of the BVI host vibrant coral reefs and thriving marine life. Snorkelers and divers regularly swim alongside graceful sea turtles, spotted eagle rays, and harmless nurse sharks. Vibrant schools of parrotfish, blue tangs, and angelfish weave through world-famous sites like the Indians, the Caves at Norman Island, and the sunken RMS Rhone.


Scuba Diving:

If you plan to scuba dive, please remember to bring any relevant certification cards/numbers if you have them.  Your charter may or may not offer diving aboard. If not, you can always jump in for a rendezvous dive, where a local dive shop takes you diving. The cost for this is approx. $250/2dives, which includes gear and is available for new or experienced divers. Please let your broker know if you are interested in diving. 



Packing Tips

Comfortable Shore Sandals: The islands feature breathtaking but hilly landscapes. St. Thomas has steep historic steps, while St. John is defined by rustic trail pathways leading down to remote beaches. Bring comfortable walking shoes or supportive sandals with good traction for exploring land.

Light Evening Layers: Even in the Caribbean, evening trade breezes during the winter months on the open water can feel surprisingly cool after a full day in the sun. Pack a light windbreaker, a casual sweatshirt, or a long-sleeve linen shirt for nights spent stargazing on the flybridge.

Reef-Safe Sunscreen Only: The USVI has a strict territorial ban on sunscreens containing "toxic 3Os" (oxybenzone, octinoxate, and octocrylene) to protect its vibrant coral reef ecosystems. Please bring strictly mineral-based, reef-safe sun protection.
