Culture

Bahamian culture is a warm, joyful blend of African and British traditions, defined by a deep-seated friendliness and a relaxed island tempo. For charter guests, connecting with the local culture is incredibly easy:

  • A Friendly Greeting: Politeness is highly valued in the Bahamas, so it’s good to greet locals with a cheerful "Good morning" or "Good afternoon"—it is the standard way to begin any interaction.

  • The Island Dress Code: The vibe here is effortlessly casual. While swimwear is perfect on your yacht or the beaches, please slip on a cover-up, t-shirt, or casual shorts when heading onshore to explore local settlements, restaurants, and shops.

  • Go with the Flow: "Island time" is a way of life here. Leave your rush behind and embrace the unhurried, friendly pace of the Out Islands.


Travel and Customs

Airport & Airlines

  • Primary Airports: Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS) in Nassau is the main hub, perfect for starting Exuma itineraries. However, some charters start and/or finish in Georgetown, and in which case use Exuma International Airport (GGT) in George Town.  Leonard M. Thompson International Airport (MHH) in Marsh Harbour is the ideal gateway for the Abacos.

  • Airlines: Major international carriers include American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, JetBlue, and Southwest Airlines. Regional flights and island hoppers are operated by Bahamasair and various local charter lines.

Ground Transfers

Private passenger vans or pre-arranged transfers are highly recommended for a seamless arrival. Uber and other ride-sharing services do not operate in the Bahamas. Traditional local taxis are widely available at major airports; they are cash-only, and fares are calculated on a flat-rate zone system. When exploring smaller out islands (such as Harbour Island or Hope Town), golf carts are the primary and highly recommended method of ground transport.

Customs & Immigration

A valid passport is required for all international visitors. Citizens of the US, Canada, the UK, the EU, and Australia do not require a visa for tourist stays. All visitors must complete a digital Bahamas Immigration card prior to arrival.  It is recommended that passports are not due to expire within 3 months of your travel dates.

Traveling with Children

Any person under the age of majority (depending on destination) is considered a minor. If a minor is traveling alone, with only one parent, or with friends/relatives, they should carry a signed and notarized travel consent letter. The specific rules and cut-offs for minors traveling with or without consent vary depending on the destination and the transportation method.

Marinas

Our primary meeting and embarkation locations in the Bahamas include:

  • Nassau Area: Yacht Haven Marina, Hurricane Hole Superyacht Marina, or Atlantis Marina.

  • The Abacos: Abaco Beach Resort & Boat Harbour Marina (Marsh Harbour).

  • The Exumas: Staniel Cay Yacht Club or Highborne Cay Marina.

Your exact yacht meeting location will be confirmed by your broker approximately two weeks prior to your charter.

Currency

  • Currency Accepted: The Bahamian Dollar (BSD), which is pegged 1:1 with the US Dollar (USD). US Dollars are universally accepted everywhere and can be used interchangeably with Bahamian currency.

  • Best Way to Exchange Money: Since USD is accepted everywhere, currency exchange is unnecessary. ATMs are widely available in Nassau and major hubs if you need to withdraw cash.

  • Cash vs. Cards: Credit cards are accepted at major resorts, supermarkets, and upscale marinas. However, cash is highly essential on the Out Islands. You will need physical cash for smaller beach bars, local straw markets, mooring fees, golf cart rentals, and water taxis.

  • Tipping:

    • Restaurants: 15% is standard. Always check your bill, as a 15% gratuity is frequently added automatically.

    • Taxis: 15% of the fare is customary.

    • Yacht Gratuity: For luxury crewed charters, an industry-standard tip of 15% to 20% of the base charter fee is customary for the crew's outstanding service.



Electrical and Communications

  • Power: Outlets in the Bahamas are standard North American Type A and Type B plugs (120V) running at 60Hz. Yacht systems match this standard, making it incredibly convenient for US-based travelers. Let your broker know in advance if you have medical devices (such as CPAP machines) requiring specific power configurations.

  • Connectivity: Check with your cellular provider before departing to activate an international roaming plan or day pass.

"Internet speeds can sometimes be weak in certain cruising areas, so it's best to download any important and necessary files ahead of time, such as music and videos. If you plan to use your phone's cellular roaming, you may want to consider purchasing an e-sim, which is usually much less expensive than your phone provider's roaming fees. Airalo is an e-sim provider, and if you use the code TCYC9670 when you sign up, you will receive a $3 credit. Tip: it's best to turn off cellular file syncing, such as photos, so the files only sync when you have a Wi-Fi connection."


Weather

  • November to April (Dry Season / Peak): Postcard-perfect blue skies and comfortable tropical temperatures averaging 21°C to 26°C (70°F to 79°F). Cool evening breezes make this the most popular time to cruise.

  • May to October (Summer/Green Season): Warmer and more humid, averaging 28°C to 32°C (82°F to 90°F). While this overlaps with the Atlantic hurricane season, the seas are famously calm and flat, offering excellent conditions for water sports.


Best Time to Charter

For crisp, breezy weather and active sailing conditions, December through April is magnificent. If your ideal vacation involves incredibly flat, glassy, "lake-like" seas, which are absolute perfection for snorkeling the shallow reefs, paddleboarding, and exploring the famous sandbars, the late spring and early summer months of May, June, and July are the absolute sweet spot.


Marine Life

The Bahamas boasts some of the most biodiverse and pristine marine ecosystems in the world. Cruising through the Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, a highly protected, no-take marine reserve, offers unparalleled underwater encounters. Snorkelers can float alongside massive, friendly nurse sharks, glide over vibrant reefs teeming with queen angelfish and sea fans, and swim with graceful green sea turtles in the shallow seagrass.

The sandbars are home to elegant southern stingrays, while deeper drop-offs offer a thrilling chance to see wild bottlenose dolphins and passing reef sharks. And of course, no Bahamian yacht charter is complete without visiting the world-famous swimming pigs at Big Major Cay, where these friendly animals swim right out to greet your yacht's tender!
