St. Vincent & The Grenadines Useful Information

Consisting of 32 untouched islands and cays, St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) is a tropical haven famed for the pristine marine life of the Tobago Cays and the exclusive shorelines of Mustique. To ensure your custom charter with The Charter Yacht Company is seamless, here is your essential logistical blueprint.



Travel and Customs


  • Airports: You will typically fly into Argyle International Airport (SVD) on the main island of St. Vincent. Alternatively, some guests fly into neighboring Barbados (BGI) and take a quick scheduled hopper flight directly to the outer islands like Bequia (BQU) or Canouan (CIW).

  • Ground Transfers: Rideshare apps like Uber do not operate in SVG. While regulated airport taxis are available, we highly recommend allowing us to arrange a private, air-conditioned vehicle transfer to transport you and your luggage directly to your marina.

  • Customs & Passports: Valid passports are required for all travelers. A major benefit of your crewed luxury charter is that your Captain handles all official entry and clearance paperwork while you relax on deck.

    Please ensure your passports are valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates.

  • Marinas: The primary boarding and departure hubs include Blue Lagoon Marina on St. Vincent, Port Elizabeth on Bequia, and the Sandy Lane Yacht Club & Marina on Canouan.



Currency


  • Currency: The official currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar (XCD), which is pegged to the U.S. Dollar. However, U.S. Dollars are widely accepted everywhere on the islands.

  • Cash vs. Cards: Credit cards are accepted at major resorts, but cash is absolutely essential in the Grenadines. You will need small-denomination, crisp USD bills for island boutiques, water taxis, beachside lobster barbecues, and iconic stops like Basil’s Bar in Mustique. Yacht crew gratuities must also be settled in cash.

  • Tipping: A 10% to 15% tip is standard in restaurants if service isn't already included. For luxury crewed charters, a standard tip of 15% to 20% of the base charter fee is customary for excellent service, presented to the Captain in cash at the end of the trip.


Electrical and Communications


  • Power: On land, outlets are British standard Type G plugs (230V). Your yacht will feature standard onboard outlets powered by generators, but bringing a universal travel adapter is highly recommended for time spent ashore.

  • Connectivity:

    Cellular coverage can be weak when sailing between the outer islands and cays. We recommend downloading your favorite music, movies, and important files ahead of time. Turn off automatic cellular photo syncing to save data, and consider an e-sim from Airalo (use code TCYC9670 for a $3 credit) for affordable roaming.


Weather


  • December – April: Peak winter season. Gorgeous sunshine, comfortable daily temperatures (80°F–85°F / 26°C–29°C), and excellent, steady trade winds for sailing.

  • May – July: Lighter breezes and beautifully calm, flat seas—perfect for anchoring and snorkeling with sea turtles.

  • August – November: Lush, tropical weather with warmer sea temperatures. While this falls within the Atlantic hurricane belt, the southern location of the Grenadines historically means fewer direct storm impacts, offering a quieter, more intimate island experience.



Packing Tips


  • Reef-Safe Sunscreen Only: Chemical sunscreens are strictly banned in the fragile marine parks, including the Tobago Cays. Please pack mineral-based, reef-safe sun protection.

  • Light Windbreaker or Shell: Quick, tropical mist showers can happen over the lush, volcanic hillsides. Bring a lightweight, breathable rain jacket.

  • Island-Chic Attire: The vibe is upscale yet effortlessly relaxed. Pack linens, sundresses, and smart swimwear cover-ups. True formalwear is not required, though smart-casual collared shirts are perfect for evenings on Mustique or Canouan.
